After many years working with and mentoring young people, and with his lifelong passion for the outdoors—spending time on the allotment, walking the hills, James eventually retrained as a Royal Horticultural Society-qualified gardener.

In 2006, he founded Hybrid Gardens in Lancashire. With just one leaflet drop and no further advertising, he built a loyal client base through word of mouth alone. Over 18 years, James worked week in, week out in —developing, shaping, and stewarding gardens with long-term care. His clients valued not only his deep horticultural knowledge, but also his thoughtful, intelligent presence and quiet reliability.​
